It feels like the Hunger Games, where we are forced to compete against one another for no reason. Look, many support adding the best years of great players. Many others support adding years of very good players who are not represented at all. I support both of these causes. But I only have five votes, so I split the baby. Others support adding players for franchises that are underrepresented. I can understand that too. This is a pretty good list of 40 we put together. To limit it to 20 is a little punitive. If it was a bad list, 20 might work. So I sent a note to SOM asking if we could at least get 25 out of 40. That way maybe everyone gets a little something from their list. Maybe they'll agree and add Joe Horlen 1964 in. He finished 21 last time. He deserves a card.

At the present moment we've had 361 votes, which means at least 73 voters, and probably upwards of 75, since some voted for fewer than 5. And we're talking about it.

This is already a win for SOM, since we're engaged in this process and talking about it, and we will probably want to try out the players we've nominated and elected. Future lesson for SOM: engaging the player community pays.

There are 15 guys who have ten or more votes. These players have established solid support and most or all will probably make the cut by being among the top 20. A few guys have failed to get beyond 5 votes. Those players may well be lost causes at this point.

But I count 17 guys with between 6 and 9 votes. These 17 are the ones who are vying for the last five slots. A few votes either way will be decisive. So if you want to get behind one of those 17 guys who have less than ten votes, now is the time to actively campaign for them.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing any of the following cards added: Cy Seymour, Charlie Sweeney (good small-ball bats); Cy Williams (neglected '20s OF star with some power); Mickey Vernon (solid franchise 1B); Shawn Green (recent star, ought to have a card); Edgar Renteria (recent GG SS who can hit); Jose Bautista (solid hitting recent reverse-righty 3b /RF).

Some of the above will make it in if they get just a few more votes. If you want to campaign for these or other cards--perhaps in the main ATG discussion list-- now's the time. Even if some of these players miss this time around, they'll get another chance in the next round, and you're building voter awareness by making a case for them.

This IS a really nice list! If I had 40 votes, I'd vote for all of them!

But apparently we need another:

Ruth card would be his 5th. I get it's his MVP season.
Lynn his 4th. His ROY.
Gary Carter his 3rd Don't see why we need this.
Tommy Davis his 4th card. Yes its his best season.
Cuyler his 3rd card. See Davis.

So we get more cards of the SAME players and NO NEW 1st cards of the 5 I mentioned.

Ruben Sierra also does not have a ATG card in the present set. Vote for the real MVP of the 1989 season. Please?

SteveF: John Wockenfuss (because of the name)

not too proud to beg for Lyman Bostock

I didn't vote for Tommy Davis, since he should have a great shot anyway.

Renteria is near the end of his career and we don't have all that many modern guys, considering there are almost twice as many teams now as there were for most of the years players have been selected from.

Tulowitzki - same reason.

for the record, except for Bostock those were not my votes

I count (my counting is not always too good) 24 cards who have no cards in ATG...I vote to have all them allowed in.........and if we add one of the multiples then swap out 1 of their cards...JMHO

Since 20 will make the cut, it seems to me that more representative results would happen if we all could vote on the 20 we would put in from the list of 40.

Anyone who hasnt voted yet,
Im putting in a last minute word for:

Cano, Lazzeri and Pendleton...

3 INF cards at important positions.
While we have both a Cano and Lazzeri card, we dont have nearly their best or most useful ones.

Not tied to any era.

Translation-
2b, SS, 3B or C.

The Cano and Lazzeri cards are 2b
Tulo SS
and
Pendleton 3B

will also agree with GB on Greinke.

Bill Joyce, with his 1.143 OPS is a 3B option :)
