For those of you who have a few minutes to kill, here's a wonderful page from the Sporting Life of May 22, 1909:

Actually here is the link to a whole series of Sporting Life "The Loyal Champion of Clean Sports" (from 1883 to 1917).

Some really wonderful stuff here:

What better way to get through a weekend than with a beverage (or several) of one's choice and some great old baseball articles.

My weekend is shot. I don't know about yours...

I don't, but I was able to find this. To each his own, I guess....

As much as the world has changed, we can still read the box score and know it was 90 feet to first base.

Good stuff, indeed, for a leisurely holiday weekend.

Also, funny comments about the 1909 Swimsuit Issue.

I noticed that Honus Wagner and friends played for "Pittsburg" not "Pittsburgh." This led me to poking around on the internet to this explanation: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etymology_ ... ontroversy
Bottom line is that the "h" at the end of Pittsburgh was officially dropped for 20 years, then restored.
