Getting the most out of a R1 Super-Reliever

PostMon Nov 17, 2014 6:26 pm

I feel that in ATG you can get your money's worth out of an expensive R3 reliever by setting him as middle man, set up, and closer. It's not unusual to get 200 quality innings out of a stud reliever that way.

The card of a $5m R1 reliever is better than that of a $5m R3 reliever, but I'm not sure if the price is worth it. I would guess that an expensive R1 reliever like Eckersley, Gagne, or Rivera can give you 75 great innings or 200 moderate innings (i.e. many pitched while fatigued)?

Do any of you feel you received your money's worth of work out of an expensive R1 reliever such as ? How many innings do you get with what kind of performance?

My feeling is that it is better to get 200 great innings out of a $5m R3 reliever than to get 75 great innings or 200 moderate innings out of a $5m R1 reliever. Your opinion?

Just out of curiosity, I took a look at numbers for expensive R1 relievers in an ongoing franchise theme league where a lot of them have been getting used:

Wetteland, John (1997) R R1 4 6 38 8 97.1 73 27 25 35 79 10 -2 0 3 3WR 2.31 1.11
Rogers Center

Nathan, Joe (2006) R R1 3 11 24 17 119.1 120 65 54 38 145 20 -1 0 10 1WR 4.07
Griffith 24

Gagne, Eric (2003) R R1 9 7 20 3 80.2 55 30 27 30 125 13 -3 0 5 1WR 3.01 1.05
Ebbets 20

Papelbon, Jonathan (2006) R R1 8 9 14 8 129.0 120 57 53 44 116 28 0 0 7 1WR 3.70 1.27
Fenway 57

Smoltz, John (2003) R R1 15 10 29 5 104.2 90 45 45 38 112 13 -4 0 7 1WR 3.87 1.22
South End 11

All of them at 100 mil. Only the Smoltz team managed a winning record, at 83-79.

I think it's a matter of asset allocation. These pitchers cost too much money for not very many innings, sucking up $$$ that could be spent elsewhere.

I avoid R1 relievers like the plague, however I have used R2 relievers as a super reliever, such as Mo Rivera and Tom Gordon. Here is a link to the one time I used Flash Gordon:

Gordon, Tom (2004) R R2 14 4 19 7 138.0 98 41 38 39 139 14 -4 0 8 1WR 2.48 .99

I've got Mariano Rivera at 132 innings in 108 games so far.

I'm employing a double super reliever strategy with Rivera and Wilcy Moore. HAL opts for Moore more often, of course.

Good feedback. While this pushes me more towards sticking with R3 than R1 studs, I am in a Franchise theme league with limited player choices. I can go with Eckersley (R1 or R2), Papelbon (R1), or Radatz (R3). Radatz gives up too many homers for my stadium (Fenway '46). While I love the Eckersley and Papelbon R1 cards, I am going to compromise and go with the Eckersley R2 card. I'll set Eck R2 for setup and closer, but not middle man. FYI here's my team:
