A Babe Ruth 1920 League $35M Cap

PostSat Oct 11, 2014 8:37 pm

Some of us have played the 1920 season via Netplay, the one where Babe Ruth is, well, Babe Ruth, and just about everyone else (pitching aside) is very much not Babe Ruth. The idea here is to set the cap at $35M and allow managers to either go Babe Ruth 1920 (via Ruth and the usual exceptional suspects) and have about $1M per player for the remaining 23 players, or spread the $35M more evenly and compete with the Babe(s) out there.

Yes, the last bit of that sentence is interesting, but I'm not suggesting a gender-based league (although it's a good idea).

Naturally, it would be dumb to create such a league and then have it sit there with 1/12 teams for the rest of recorded SOM time. Would anyone else be interested in such an idea? What about a closely similar one that is more to 12 people's liking? I do see that SOM allows for an "other" cap, which helps us here.

Anybody?

Edit: I see SOM in its infinitely not infinite wisdom has a $60M-$999M limit. No problem..we'd just have a gentleman's agreement to stay at $35M (or "player's agreement" if "babe" show up to play, which would be great).

Actually, I believe, using the "other" option on salary caps, you can set a ceiling of whatever you want, including $35 mil.

I normally steer clear of low salary-cap leagues (and $35 mil is WELL below my limit, and I doubt that Ruth could be used at that ceiling because there don't appear to be enough <$1 million players in the DB era to go around), but I'd be willing to try one at $50-60 mil, limited specifically to players carded between 1901 and 1920 (if there is indeed a sufficient number of cards that fit the year stipulation).

We're at the midway point of a $60M deadball league: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/league/424751. Ruth has outhomered 9 of the 11 other teams, and matched one other.

Cheap usable subs/ relievers are relatively few and far between, as we quickly realized in trying to put our teams together.

Don't think a $35M league would be feasible using Ruth. His 1920 card is 13.03M - which would leave 21.97M for the remaining 23 spots. He might hit 60 homers, and drive in 95 runs...

We just finished a $45m league. http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/league/423964

This one was DH. Last year we did it with no DH. http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/league/348893

Count me in for a $35m league.

RiojaDave: Those leagues are great! Definitely what I'm talking about here and I especially love the Klu/Deron Johnson platoon in the 2nd league above. Naturally, I'd be interested in joining up if the leagues above are recurring.

As for $35M, going to $45M might be necessary to get 12 players, but I'd certainly like to try the lower figure. Maybe $40M...anybody else?
