Do poor def and Inj cards have any value?

Do poor def and Inj cards have any value?

Postby jmgreer » Sun Jan 31, 2010 4:04 am

Quick question; is there any value in a player that has a terrible def as well as high injury rating. I have L.Gonzalez on my team as a starting LF because I was drawn to the great OBP/SLG. I now realize that his def makes him a liability in the field. I also have a solid clutch hitting DH. Add in the injury issues and I’m wondering if this player is even worth keeping.

I am now thinking of using him as a bench player vs LHP and back up to my DH. Would $1.79 be too much to have sitting most of the time? Would this player likely have any trade appeal?

Any comments?

I thought it was a decent point of discussion. I am a rookie at this game and I’m trying to figure out a threshold point of where poor DEF/INJ rating could be accepted and in return OPS/ LOW $.

I read one post that said a player’s salary goes up for every good aspect on their card. Is it possible to find sleeper card that perform way above their value as with the other fantasy based games. Or is this game just about finding the right mix of players and managing properly.

Well, I think you prettty summarized it there in your post.

In my opinion, 1.79M is too expensive for a bench player role, and very expensive for a platoon player. My own criteria is to have at least 400 AB from someone on whom I spend 1-2M. Less than 400 AB would be acceptable only if the player will dominate in his platoon role.

As for defense, again, there are different criteria. My own is to never play a "4" in the outfield, and 3e10(+4) is as close as it can be from my criteria. I think I would avoid him if I expect my rotation to have a high whip.

Thanks for the reply.

Why is 400AB an important number of at bats? I though you only saved INJ if you were 680AB and only got 3 games max if over 600AB.

it depends where u put the bad defence. a lot more acceptable at 3b and 1b. i try not to spend more than 2.5 m on aplatoon player vs lhp. it depends on how many lefties youll face from the other 11 teams. i have a league and the lhp vs rhp is 60/40, thus platoon players who can hit lhp can be worth the extra dough.

The hi-injury rating is a different ball of wax. it can be frustrating to have a player go down time and time again, especially around the deadline.

I don't know where you heard about 400. 600 and 680 are the magic numbers.

Hey guys, you need to read carefully. I'm not saying 400 is a magical number or anything. I'm only saying that I am willing to pay 1.5M or so on players for whom I plan to use a lot, and my criteria for "playing a lot" is to have about 400 AB or more. If I plan to use a player only a bench player and limit him to 150 AB, then I will spend less than 1M on him.

I like using alot of the high injury players and find that you can have success with them, but when I use them I tend to tie them to expensive back-ups who don't get many at-bats. I had one team with with a slew of 1M+ back ups that won 104 games, but, of course, lost in the playoffs.

Of course good hitters with high injuries and poor defense have value. All kinds of players have value, including the opposite; all-field no hit types.

The relevant question isnt whether a certain type of player has value its whether Strat's pricing system efficiently captures that value relative to players of different type but same overall value. Thus, let's say you have a great fielder lousy hitter at 3b who is worth one win over replacement over a season. And you take a different 3b who is a decent hitter but lousy fielder yet also worth one win over replacement player per season. Strat should price them both the same. If you can prove that Strat systematically prices one type of player below a different type of equivalent value...ie, makes the one-win defender "cheaper" to draft than the one-win hitter....then and only then can you say draft defense over hitting.

I dont buy the line of commentary on this and other threads that "one should never draft 4's at outfield corners" because for that to be true we must assume that Strat systematically "overrates" those corner outfielders with poor defense in its pricing. I have my own theory about which types of players that Strat underrates/overrates and i will keep that as a trade secret, but simply asserting "4's at the corner" is bad/undraftable is false. The answer is always, compared to what type of replacement and at what cost.

DH bad defensive players.

Back up or platoon high injury players with a 600 PA player.
