Funny Uncle chiming in..........

Postby FoggyOne » Fri Oct 23, 2009 2:58 pm

A true Strat Savant.

Here is an excerpt of a conversation the year following Uncle's Tour Championship

Wockenfuss: "Uncle, of course he gets thrown out a lot. When he is held, he is only 1-12."

Uncle: "What do mean? He is a "AA" stealer???????

[Background noise...LOUD]: THWACK! THWACK! (the sound of me hitting my head against my desk repeatedly in disbelief].

Here is Uncle sipping his celebratory juicebox following his big Tour Win:

In addition to playing online Strat, Uncle enjoys Wheel of Fortune. Uncle is also a self-styled "very good driver".

[quote:ce73078b65="maligned"]Interesting that advancement through the semifinal round seems to require a lot of luck. Last year, 1/3 of the regular season Top 12 advanced to the finals, then 1/3 of the 13-24 finishers, then 1/3 of the 25/36 finishers.
Could determination of the finals somehow be a synthesis of regular season and semi-final results? It appears this year that nearly half of the eligible participants are given semifinal positions. This seems like a bit much. Some of the past finals years, the finalists almost all had career winning % of .530 or higher. This makes for a very strong finals.
The drama of the semifinals allows more owners to stay engaged longer, but perhaps a regular season #36 finisher should have to have a very special performance to move into the final 12.

Great thread, by the way.[/quote:ce73078b65]

I would be open for changes to give the top players a bigger incentive.

Maybe the top 8 get a bye to the Finals
The next 24 play for the final 4 spots
Winners and runner ups get in.

How about top FOUR get the bye, 24 semi-finalists compete for the last EIGHT spots? Awarding 67% of the Finals on a bye seems top heavy to me.

I would like that better, too, because it's a bit unfair to have to win the first round of the semi-finals to make it to the finals. As we all know, there's too much luck involved in the playoffs. Tom's idea (above) guarantees that you make the finals with a good regular season team.

More Tour Fodder

Postby mesquiton » Sun Nov 01, 2009 4:10 am

I’ve tracked down the complete final standings for each of the last 4 Tours, and compiled them below.

Because it’s all Tour managers competing against each other on a level playing field (the Tour), this is probably the largest “controlled” statistical sample of performances by 200x managers ever compiled. So, it might even have a little bit of statistical validity, for whatever that’s worth.

Over the last 4 years, 234 different managers have completed at least one Tour. Of those, 88 have played at least 2 Tours, including 32 who have done 3 Tours, and 16 managers have completed all 4 Tours. (There are also 22 Tour rookies competing for 2009, including 2 of the current top 3 leaders, [b:d4bdce7b2c]Marklen[/b:d4bdce7b2c] and [b:d4bdce7b2c]crs76[/b:d4bdce7b2c].)

Those completing at least 2 Tours are listed below with final standings ranks for years completed. Managers are sorted by number of Tours played, then ranked by average final point standings:

The semi final solution I like best is to put the top 36 in the semi's like it is currently. After the semi's are over, carry over the regular season results and add in the semi final results. If there are 5 regular season events next year, you use everyone's average of the 5 events plus the semi's. The 3 champions from the semi events would get berths to the finals, plus the top 9 averages (reg season + semi's).

With this format, you still get the benefit of 36 spots in the semi's to keep more teams in the hunt during the regular season. Everyone who makes the semi's has a shot to make the Finals if they win their semi final championship, and the top 9 overall managers get in to the Finals.

That would work as well. I am just throwing out thoughts
