Roster planning for a non-DH league.

I was curious as to how many pitchers and hitters one should carry in a non-DH league. Ten pitchers and 13 hitters are more than sufficient in a DH league, but does one need more options when having to pinch hit for the pitcher?

I believe so...I usually will carry 14-15 hitters, 2 of which are expressly for pinch hitting....

Played in one non dh league, finished with 94 wins, carrying only 13 hitters. Can be done if you have 8 players with 600 PA's and a couple of decent sub 1million hitters such as Gomez, Young, and Grieve, and a halfway decent pitching staff that will take you into the late innings. I'd spend the extra money building a pitching staff with the money saved from carrying only 13 hitters. How many times is a pitcher going to be pinch hit for anyways in a game? Once, maybe two times tops. If your pitcher is coming up to bat that many times in the late innings anyways, you're scoring a helluva lot of runs, no?

When playing ATGII I stuck to 10 pitchers and 13 hitters, because of the pool of players is so big that I managed to get several inj 0 position players which allowed me to have two good defensive backups with good speed and bats to PH with and not worry about injuries, but that's in ATG...in O5 I've only recently started playing my first non-DH league, I am carrying 12 pitchers and 15 hitters...could've and should've started with 14 hitters and 11 pitchers though:

Pitching: 5 Starters, 2 Specialists (LH/RH), 1 Mop-up, 1 LH Middle relief, 1 RH middle relief, 1 Set-up and 1 Closer. Given the first third of the season I could've gone ahead without the LH middle guy (Embree in this case). I have noticed that in order for my specialists to be used strictly as that I need to carry one extra pitcher, otherwise the specialist get to pitch to a lot of batter of his weak side. I could also have gone with a mop-up/spot starter but I am using Kieschnick as the mop-up so as to use his good hitting, I didn't want to have a good bat in the pen that gets PH for in games where I am catching up. So far so good as far as my pitching goes, Kieschnick is batting a decent .300 with a good ERA, my Specialists are being limited to their area of strength and are having pretty good numbers. BTW I should point out that I am using a C3 and hence my having an extra arm in there for middle relief. If I had gotten a C6 I'd probably had gone with 11 pitchers to start the season.

I'd say that 11 is probably what I'll try next time.

Hitting, I have the usual but I do have two extra under 1 Mil hard L/R hitters to PH with. They do find their ABs but they are both all-or-nothing kind of hitters...they're both doing O.K. but it's way too early to tell the kind of season they'll have.

I would think 13/10 is more workable without a DH than with. Personally I almost always go 15/10, but in the non-DH leagues I feel overloaded with hitters.
