GMKL 2012 Spring drops

Postby kaviksdad » Fri Mar 16, 2012 1:38 pm

Every year we have confusion on how many drops are required, how many prospects can you carry, etc. I' thought I'd include some of the discussions we've had over the years to give you more insight on why GMKL is just a little bit different.

So here are the rules on drops:

1) ALL MANAGERS MUST DROP AT LEAST 10 PLAYERS;

2) NO MANAGER MAY DROP MORE THAN 15 PLAYERS;

3) PROSPECT PROMOTIONS AND DROPS MUST BE DONE PRIOR TO THE START OF THE FREE AGENT DRAFT;

4a) AFTER DROPPING 10 TO 15 REGULAR ROSTER PLAYERS AND
4b) AFTER ALL EXPIRING PROSPECTS HAVE BEEN EITHER PROMOTED OR DROPPED AND
4c) AFTER ALL NON-EXPIRING PROSPECTS HAVE BEEN PROMOTED, DROPPED OR UNCHANGED THEN
4d) NO MANAGER MAY HAVE A ROSTER OF MORE THAN 30 PLAYERS PRIOR TO THE START OF THE SPRING FREE AGENT DRAFT.

The important thing to remember -

1 - you cannot have more than 30 players on your roster prior to the draft
2 - you must drop a minimum of 10 players off your active roster
3 - you cannot drop more than 15 players off your active roster[/b:52b348997c]

Some interesting discussions on prospects

I see a potential problem with the promo cut rules as they are written. in this format, the maximum number of prospects that can be promoted is five. for example, if you have 8 prospects that you would like to keep, after cutting the maximum 15 guys you would only have 5 empty roster spots thereby obliging you to cut three prospects outright. was this the intent? if so nevermind.

Dave wrote:

Clarification question KD - we have a min of 10 & a max of 15 drops. Is that gross or net? Meaning, I have a ton of prospect list promos, so was hoping to be able to cut more than 15 to accommodate them, but also meaning pre-draft my roster would still be between 25 and 30 only if I was allowed to cut more than 15, which I think is the goal of the min/max rule? If I can't cut more than 15 my pre-draft roster will be 32 as it stands.

And my reply:

My philosophy when starting this league was to make sure everyone churned their rosters regularly, which is why the league requires at least 25% of every manager's team to be released each year. My goal was to increase competitive balance and keep everyone interested. Constant losing (except for me it seems) tends to discourage interest, increase frustration and can lead to loss of managers. I was hoping to keep everyone with the idea that in any year they could win it all with good roster management.

The prospect glitch that Smokey refers to is a secondary part of this concept. I have seen managers hoard prospects in other leagues and use them to supplement a very solid core of regular players. The results of this is often a free agent draft where a few managers have a small number of picks because they already are set at every position. I didn't want that here.

The way around the prospect issue that Smokey refers to is also in the rules. Prospects can be promoted at any time during each season, provided you have roster space to do so. You can't drop a regular player just to promote a prospect, but you can promote a prospect to fill a vacant position that results from an unbalanced trade. That's the key - if you have a bunch of prospects and are in fear of losing some the following spring make an unbalanced trade or two and clear roster space. Then promote as many prospects as necessary to your regular roster to fill the open slots.

This gives you an idea of how wanted GMKL to run.

Also, there is one rule everyone needs to understand, and this is for my own personal benefit -

When you post your drops [b:eff38806f4]DO NOT EDIT PREVIOUS MESSAGES[/b:eff38806f4]!

I won't be going back and forth to get your drops straight.

[b:eff38806f4]If you need to amend your drops make a new post. The last post is your "official" drop listing[/b:eff38806f4]

Also remember, [b:eff38806f4]we will not be using any unleashed cards[/b:eff38806f4].
