1969 new theme league - suspended

Bernie seems to be saying 1969 will be back in late May. So, in preparation, let's get a theme league going! I suggest an auction-type league where we bid on players. It would be helpful if there was a link to the 69 cards. Anyone know of a link?

Here is one idea for a league. Each owner selects a home team and gets their ballpark. Then, we open up bidding on players from most veteran and ending up with rookies. 1952 is the first year with Hoyt Wilhelm and Dick Hall up for bids (they were rookies in 1952). Then 1953 rookies up for bid, and so on. The twist is that the original team gets the option to sign the player for their 1969 salary plus 10%. Since Hoyt Wilhelm came up with the Giants, the owner of the Giants (if there is one) could elect to claim Wilhelm for 4.80 + 0.48 = 5.28 million. If the Giants pass, then Wilhelm is up for bidding starting at 0.5 mil.

What do ya think?

sounds cool....some thoughts:

*10% isn't much. in most auctions (including the 2 '69 auctions I've been in) the stars go WAY higher than 10% of their salary.

*what would the auction money/cap be. We've done $80 and $100 previously.

*like the idea of having a set order of bringing guys up, how would we do guys from same year (alphabetically?)

*for the first time ever you'd have to have a no-bid time set. In other words, if nobody bids on a guy in the first 24 hrs, he is out and we move on.

anyway, I'm in. Somebody throw my name on a list when a sign-up is started.

Paul, you raise some good points. I definitely want to use $80 mil in bidding dollars, although the league would be 100 or 200 mil cap.

You're right that 10% is too low. I think a better alternative is to bid on teams, then you can use your remaining money to sign players from your team at the normal salary, or save your money to bid on free agents. I think that would be the fairest way since the Orioles and Reds have the best players.

Here is a list of the most prominent players and their rookie teams:

Orioles –Boog Powell, Brooks Robinson, Paul Blair, Mark Belanger, Dave Johnson, Mike Epstein, McNally
Giants – McCovey, Bonds, Mays, Marichal, Matty Alou, Bill Hands
Reds – Frank Robinson, Bench, Rose, Perez, Art Shamsky, Lee May, Leo Cardenas, Curt Flood, Cuellar, Osteen, Maloney
Red Sox – Petrocelli, Reggie Smith, Yaz, Mike Andrews
Athletics – Reggie Jackson, Sal Bando
Pirates – Clemente, Stargell,
Astros/45s – Jim Wynn, Joe Morgan, Staub, Dierker
Braves – Aaron, Millan, Carty, Torre, Hawk Taylor, P Niekro, Ron Reed
Yankees – Roy White, Frank Fernandez, Woodie Held, Mike Hegan, Fritz Peterson, Stottlemyre
Mets – Cleon Jones, Bud Harrelson, Seaver, Koosman, Nolan Ryan
Dodgers – Frank Howard, Willie Davis
Twins – Carew, Oliva, Tovar
Phils – Dick Allen, Fergie Jenkins
Senators – Killebrew, Dick Bosman
Cubs – Billy Williams, Lou Brock, Santo
White Sox – Buford, Aparicio
Tigers – McAuliffe, Northrup, Kaline, Lolich, McLain
Cards – Tolan, Carlton, Gibson, Chuck Taylor
Indians – Agee, McDowell, Jim Perry
Angels – Messersmith, Ken Tatum

Why use 80M in bidding dollars when just $80 works just as well?

I figure 80 mil is easiest since it matches the SOM salary structure.

I'm against bidding on teams. I'd rather go with a straight draft with the order selected by vets down to rookies as you had stated. If you want to somehow include the other option I'd say make it for 50% over his regular value. As I recall Reggie and McCovey went for close to (or over) $20M last draft we did.

OK. It looks like there is little or no interest in this theme. So, let's move on. If anyone else has an idea to get a league started that will carry over to the new SOM site, sign me up.
