bunting is hard to do

Postby franky35 » Wed May 05, 2010 1:53 pm

I am not a big fan of bunting, but in my current team I have a poor hitter batting behind a good (but not great) base-stealer. I have manager settings for bunting "aggresive" and the poor hitter as "bunt more." Through 6 games, as far as I can tell, the bunter has not attempted a single bunt. I don't know why this is, maybe position in the lineup. But I'll watch it for more games and see what happens.

If people have advice on bunting, post it here.

an update. I have bunting set to "very aggressive" and Jerry Grote set to "bunt more." Grote is batting 6th vs. righties. At the halfway mark in the season, Grote has not made even 1 sac bunt. What is really astonishing to me is that I haven't seen one obvious bunting situation for Grote. I have Roy White hitting in front of Grote and White has good OBP, but he hits a fair number of doubles and has stolen quite a bit.

So, I've learned that the 6 position doesn't see many good bunting situations. I will follow this to see if Grote lays one down when an obvious bunting situation occurs.

the season is more than 2/3 over and Grote has not had one sac bunt. HAL just will not let Grote bunt. He has had several bunting opportunities (not a ton, but at least 5+ situations where a bunt would make sense), but he isn't bunting.

My last attempt will be to move Grote up to 2nd in the lineup, which I will try late in the season if it won't make a difference in the playoffs.

At the end of the season, I moved Grote up to 2nd for 9 games. Batting from the 2nd spot he got 2 sac bunts. In about 80 games at the 6 spot Grote got no sac bunts.

So, my conclusion is that HAL will not bunt from the 6 position in the lineup, but will bunt from the 2 position.

On a different team, I notice that Hundley bunted from the 7th spot in the lineup.

Has anyone seen a bunt from the 6th spot in the lineup? If so, was there anything unusual about it?
