One Spot Left!

Postby mesquiton » Thu Nov 12, 2009 4:04 am

Final event leagues 2 and 5 are now in playoff finals. League 6 wraps up regular season play tomorrow night. Only [b:3c8004444a]McBurns[/b:3c8004444a] still has a chance to pass [b:3c8004444a]salmonbellies[/b:3c8004444a] for the final spot.

[b:3c8004444a]McBurns[/b:3c8004444a] has clinched his division at 93 wins, with 6 to play. It appears that he can make the Final 36 by winning 3 of his final 6 games, or by winning his first playoff round.

Still a few more seeds to be determined. All spots could be settled as early as tomorrow night, but more likely we're looking at early next week.

Semifinalists Set

Postby mesquiton » Sat Nov 14, 2009 4:36 am

Congratulations to the 2009 Players' Championship Tournament Semifinalists! :D

The last league wrapped its regular season last night, and all 36 spots are filled, with [b:cca6e1d65d]McBurns[/b:cca6e1d65d] just squeezing into the final slot.

He won his division, so his final seed will need to wait for his playoff results. Also, [b:cca6e1d65d]dadnsam[/b:cca6e1d65d] is still in playoff finals that could affect his seed. Looks like all other seeds are set!

Please check your scores just in case. 8-)

Still One Seed Undecided

Postby mesquiton » Thu Nov 19, 2009 2:08 am

Looks like it will be at least a couple more days before seeds are final. Last night, [b:04dc99fac4]McBurns[/b:04dc99fac4] won his semi series. He now meets [b:04dc99fac4]duffyone[/b:04dc99fac4] in the League 6 finals, to finish the last regular season league of the 2009 Tour.

That moves [b:04dc99fac4]McBurns[/b:04dc99fac4] up to 34th spot for now. If he wins the finals, he jumps to 29th, after tiebreakers. Either way, all Semifinals seeds will be set.

first time i question tiebreakers

Postby bomberny50 » Thu Nov 19, 2009 3:05 pm

but tie breakers are set and i did lose the tiebreakers, but what i think is most important is the higher score that was dropped. but that's me.

If it's dropped, it's dropped. So it doesn't and shouldn't count period. That's the whole point of dropping the lowest score, so a bad round won't kill you.

For what it's worth, I agree with Bomberny50, and think that for future tiebreakers his suggestion should be considered, and here's why:

Teams are already getting a bonus for winning a playoff spot/finals slot/championship -- that's an extra 20 points. To then give them ANOTHER bonus for the tiebreaker, it seems like one great season has the potential to leapfrog the less good manager into the playoffs.

By instead taking the average of the five seasons, the more consistent manager would get in, whether s/he won a championship or not, not potentially the manager with one skewed season.

Just my two cents. In NO WAY suggesting the rules get changed now, just something to consider for next year.

I disagree about including the fifth season. I took a risk on the 60M season when I didn't have to, and it backfired and that was my worst team. It got dropped, so no harm. However, I (and others as well, I suspect) learned from my experience about to draft and manage in such a league. I shouldn't be penalized for taking that $20 risk.

If the tiebreakers are ultimately changed, I don't suggest implementing a 5 season average. The most obvious reason is that not everyone participates in 5 seasons, so what do you do if one person had 5 seasons and the other didn't? What if there were multiple tie-break groups? You need to have a rule that can be universally applied, regardless of circumstance.

I am glad people are talking about tiebreakers and playing 5 seasons compared to 4. Here is my question, when are we starting the next phase? The holidays are coming then spring, this feels like the NBA and NHL regular & Playoff seasons  . SGT D
