Closers like Rivera are rare. The 2012 season so far demonstrates how foolish it is to give rich multi-year contracts to run-of-the-mill RPs like Heath Bell when better options are probably young arms down on the farm or journeymen replacement level relievers. Ozzie Guillen may have to rethink this whole designated closer thing if Bell's struggles continue. The best games the Marlins in their recent 7-game winning streak had were complete games by Buerhle and Zambrano. If a SP is cruising along and has 100 pitches or less, why not let him start the ninth inning and have your top reliever warming up in the pen just in case? If you don't have a 3 up - 3 down flamethower as your "closer" - why do managers feel pressure to bring in a new guy when the starter is doing great?
