You have to learn how to use the settings... HAL is only as good as what you tell him to do.... If you put your closer max he will not come into the game when it is tied unless you have him set to also come in tied with closer set on regular.... You also obviously had the pitching setting on reliever use conservative.... that allowed Clemens to go 11 innings. But once Clemenos was tired, HAL interprets every pitcher he brings in to all be used to their max.
I would suggest the problem isn't HAL it is you... ask some veteren players how they use the settings ....it takes trial and error but you can learn to use the settings to get the effect that you want.
