Now playing: The 2010 Season

Hey Bernie...I'd never seen that explanation before, and had wondered why the "unleashed" players couldn't just be included. But that post does an exceptional job of summing up your thought process...you've swayed me to be a believer in the philosophy...great job!

[quote:b33c97798a="bernieh"]It's a subjective call.

Though instead of thinking of it as those 150 ABs being too impactful as a whole, the way I think of it is it's too unrealistic to have a 22-year-old catcher with 82 major league PAs on your roster with a .700 OBP card that you can stick in the leadoff spot every time you face a lefty. Yeah, there's all sorts of unrealistic strategic tendencies in SOM, but in my opinion that's crossing the (subjective) line.

Fwiw, I explain more about our philosophy about Fluke cards here.[/quote:b33c97798a]

No worries, he was just my only useable catcher in a keeper league. So my plans are shot. I knew he would be great vs. lefties, but not by so much.

Frankly, some of the cards this year have me mystified.

Take Eric Hinske. He faced 92 percent of his ABs vs RHs, but his OPS was poor, something around .750. Against lefties, he had 22 ABs but had an OPs over 1.200. His card is even and might actually be better against RHs. I know his lefty totals are a fluke, but they are what happened. So, why did HAL decide to make him an even card? (not that TSN can control this, just saying)

Also, I think they put too much emphasis on defensive impact this season. As most evidenced by Roy Halladay's card.

In cases like Hinske's where there is insufficient data but the player has a history Strato uses a blend of current numbers and historical numbers. Thus Hinske might have great numbers this year in his only 22 ABS but he gets drug down by his history. Rookie cards like it or not have no history so get the outlandish card.

Here's my wonderful experience with the 2010 SOM player set (first six games in an 12 team league):

LI Lolitas: 2 errors
Rest of League: 38 errors

LI Lolitas: 13 unearned runs
Rest of League: 13 unearned runs

Conclusion:
It sucks to be me
